Students and freedom war

Should students join politics in Kashmir? It is a hackneyed question. It has been debated in the past in schools, colleges, universities and media. Those for it often quoted Mahatma Gandhi. He at all important junctures of Indian Freedom Struggle called upon students to join the freedom struggle. Those opposed to it often took refuge in a quote from Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali wherein he has not been in favor of students joining politics.I leave the moral debate over students’ participation in politics to educationists like Prof. Agha Ashraf Ali and Prof. Abdul Gani Madhosh and look at the dynamics of students’ participation in politics in the state. In fact no serious work has been done by any of our political historians on the role of the student community in the Kashmir struggle. Seen in right perspective a comprehensive and honest political history of Kashmir is yet to be written. The blur that has been surrounding the objectives and goals of the political struggle of the state since 1931 could be attributed to the lack of a political history of Kashmir. Here in this column I will try to look at the role of students in politics at different phases in our history. It would not be wrong to state that Kashmir’s struggle for freedom was started by Muslim students of Jammu about a decade or so before the birth of the Muslim Conference in Srinagar. The Muslims Students and Youngman Association was started more or less in the first decade of the twentieth century. It was this student’s organization that raised its voice against the denial of religious and political freedom to the people of Jammu and Kashmir by the autocratic Dogra rulers. Notwithstanding Kashmir struggle has been purely struggle for justice and fairplay against denial of equal rights to the Muslims and discriminatory and oppressive tax system for the majority community the cause for the birth of this struggle was religion. It was first preventing an Imam from delivering the Friday sermon in a Jammu mosque then the sacrilege of the Quran that sparked the widespread agitation in Jammu. This agitation was led by the Young Men’s Muslim Association an organization of students and youth of Jammu that though born in 1909 was revived by Chowdary Ghulam Abbass in 1924. The cause of 31 July 1931 uprising that is seen as an important benchmark in our struggle has been religious and not political. It was not at the beginning of the movement against the feudal autocracy that the students played a pro-active role. The role of students emerges more distinctly at the critical juncture of the split of the Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference and birth of the National Conference. A substantial section of students had opposed the move. It in fact has been this phase of our struggle that not only shaped the politics of the state but is seen by many a historian as the year of birth of Kashmir tragedy. During this phase the students played a pro-active role in politics. The most important role was played by the Muslim Students Federation. In 1944 this students organization was in vanguard in receiving Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Many student leaders were arrested and put in jails for many years. Like all other dissenting voices the voice of the students was also strangulated after 1947. Many a student leaders were either pushed across the Cease Fire Line or were forced to leave and crossover to the other side of Kashmir. Some best minds who could have made immense contribution to the growth of development of the state were exiled. After 1947 we see a brief role of students against the deposition of Sheikh Abdullah. Some students had raised their voice against the arrest of Sheikh Abdullah and they were arrested. The arrested also included Farooq Abdullah- it was first and last time when Farooq Abdullah was arrested. There has not been much of a role of students in politics in the state after 1953.What could be seen as a major role of the students in politics in the state started during the 1964 Holy Relic Movement? The 1964 saw the birth of Jammu and Kashmir Youth League which had Abdul Rashid Kabali, Muhammad Anwar Ashai, Sheikh Ghulam Muhammad, Sufi Ghulam Qadir and many others in the vanguard. This organization was followed by the Jammu and Kashmir Young Men’s League, Jammu and Kashmir Students Action Committee. In one of my previous columns I had written a bit in detail about the role played by these organization during the 1964 Holy Relic Movement and the 1965 youth movement or even during the 1967 Hindu agitation. In that column that I did not go into the causes of the death of the Youth League, I did not go into details as to how some of its top leaders were handpicked by the intelligence agencies that had made Sheikh Abdullah to forewarn people against some of youth organization. I leave this subject to the honest confession of some of the members of these organizations. Their honest confession could not be a lesson in politics for the new generation but would also enable them to discern a much needed role in the given bizarre political situation of the state. The 1965 students movement in Kashmir could have emerged assumed the same significance and importance as that led by Cohen Bendit in France or Tariq Ali in Pakistan at the same time but for the post 9 August 1965 happenings that took away Kashmir initiative from the youth movement. It is in itself a debate as to how adversely the operation Gibraltar effected the Kashmir movement.

Freedom Of Kashmir

His attitude about Kashmir reflects poorly on New Delhi's political sense that it has failed to realise that the more it tries to suppress the Kashmiris' urge to get out of its cruel hold, the more entrenched in the people's psyche becomes the freedom struggle and the more conscious the world gets of the urgency with which the dispute needs to be resolved. Amnesty International recently called upon President Obama to raise the issue of India's brutal oppression in Occupied Kashmir when he meets Prime Minister Singh in Washington. Its words, "The Indian side of Kashmir is an area where the security forces commit mass human rights abuses with impunity...facilitated by the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act and other similar laws." Similarly, President Hu and President Obama, in a joint statement, have observed that the two sides, "agreed to cooperate...(in) bringing about more stable, peaceful relations in all of South Asia". Secretary of State Clinton maintained, in an interview on Friday, that the US wanted the resumption of talks between India and Pakistan to sort out their differences, including Kashmir. However, India has been greatly upset at these declarations and continues to defy the calls for an understanding look at the situation that the lingering dispute creates both within Occupied Kashmir and outside. It is a measure of Pakistan's disappointment that Foreign Minister Qureshi had to say that though we were urging for the resumption of talks, we were not looking for a photo session; we wanted 'constructive engagement and meaningful dialogue'. He stressed that any talks without the participation of Pakistan would be futile. He had in mind India's efforts to engage the Kashmiri leaders from the occupied state to find a solution. Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit did some plain speaking, when he remarked that India did not want peace in the region. His conclusion is absolutely justified since New Delhi refuses to come to the negotiating table just because it would have to discuss Kashmir.

How much violance is enough?

Just how much violance is enough?Kashmiri's, who have suffered years of political bickering between india and Pakistan, say they have suffered enough. As India and pakistan talk on the table on all the issues - including Kashmir - in New Dehli today, people ub srinagar just want to be left alone. Sitting inside the his toric jama Masjid during afternoon prayers, the scene is almost melancholic. The semon goes on, devotees repeat verses from the Holy Quran and woman pray, many for their lost sons. The much talked about but elusive peace process hasn't reached here Yet . A woman eeeps and she prays. She weeps because lost her only son to the insurgency a year ago. She doesnot blame India or Pakistan for this.
What did my son do? He wwasn't with either India or pakistan. He was just palying in the market when an encounter happened. As long as we have politicians with vested interestes in power, there's no hope for our land.' Smilar sentiments are echoed across srinagar. She said "All we want are jobs, food and electricity - we donot care which side it comes from. Politicians play with our lives contqantluy,'.they simply want a kashmir free of violence, anger and fear.A Kashmir where the voices of the voiceless are truly heared and nort just debated.
Is such a Kashmir possible? Will the india - Pkaistan talks help progress the peace process in any way .
What do you think?

Media in Kashmir

It is a known fact that National Conference regime in Kashmir has gagged the media without any impunity and has transformed many local Kashmiri newspapers into National Conference Mouthpieces. When Governor Vohra gagged the local cable news channels during his rule, our cable operators blacked out everything and stopped the broadcast of cable TV throughout the valley. But when Omar Abdullah banned them, they kept a criminal mum and swallowed the bitter censor pill without any major fuss. What is the reason. Why our cable operators did not protest this time around? Well, the reason is Omar Abdullah himself. Its not any secret that one of the most trusted lieutenants of Omar Abdullah is Devinder Rana, owner of Take One Media. Devender Rana and Payal Abdullah Singh are de- facto rulers of Jammu and Kashmir. Devender Rana holds the strings of all the cable operators of Kashmir in his tight hands. It is Devender Rana who is the distributor of Star TV, Zee Network and Sony in J & K. Had cable operators protested against the gagging, Devender Rana would have snapped the signal of these channels to the operators and might even have forced them to clear all the previous dues without any concessions or delays, ofcourse with the active help of local Shahi Kashmir Police.
What does all this mean. It means Media in Kashmir is not free and is only serving its own vested interests primarily. Even Israelis have never influenced the Arab media but in Kashmir things are different. Our media is controlled by stooges of the oppressor and real unbiased voice of truth is non existent. We lack Journalism of courage and truth. We are living a voiceless life and all the voices which speak out for Kashmir and Kashmiris are prejudiced in one or the other way.

Status of kashmir

‘Azad’ means free and Azad Kashmir was supposed to serve as a model state whose liberty and freedom would inspire rebellion in Indian-administered Kashmir. That did not happen for several reasons. Constitutionally, Azad Kashmir is not a part of Pakistan. But neither is it an independent state. For its entire 62-year history, it has depended on Pakistan for its economic and political survival. It does not even issue its own postage stamps. Because Islamabad has always exercised its claim on the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir, Azad Kashmir is not counted as a fifth province of Pakistan. But for all practical purposes, Muzaffarabad lives under Islamabad’s shadow. Its first government was established on Oct 24, 1947 with Sardar Mohammed Ibrahim as president. On Nov 3, 1947, Azad Kashmir sought unsuccessfully to join the United Nations as a member state. In March 1949, after the dust had settled along the ceasefire line, Azad Kashmir signed a power-sharing arrangement with the Government of Pakistan ceding all authority related to defense, foreign affairs, refugees and the plebiscite to Pakistan.

It is reality Kashmir is not a part of Pakistan but it fully dependant on pakkistan...there are some reasons behind this propaganda Pakistani Govt. do no want whether Kashmiri stand on their own foots and its second reason is the most of the kashmiri natives are live in abroad and they do not too part in the development of his country….But its time to come and accumulated at one platform and think about the future of Kashmir…Inshallaha that time is not too far when we get freedom from India and make their own decisions..

As earlier, I discuss with you KASHMIR is a very beautiful place but the continue war of freedom continuously spoil its beauty. Some part Kashmir gets freedom in 1948 and some part is tilled disputed and the Kashmiri peoples are still trying for freedom. In this context they are sacrifice his lives and wealth.
The Indian army everyday kill some Kashmiri peoples and our woman’s are victim of his sexual harassment but every one is in this world is just a spectators and they are enjoying this kind of grimness.
Now its time to stand up and took solid step against this wrongfulness and discuss this issue with the whole world and get freedom...Inshallah

History of KASHMIR

Kashmir is perhaps, to possess an authentic account of its history from the very earliest period. This past account of the valley, its culture and traditions, rise and fall of various Kingdoms, victory and defeats of the people have been noted carefully, yet critically by the sons of its soil. True it is, that the Kashmiriat literature is very rich in information about Kashmir.
The State of Jammu and Kashmir is located in the heart of Asia. At the time of the division of the sub-continent in 1947A.D. With the Hindu Dogra rulers conspiracy Hindu India subjugated the Jammu and Kashmir. Kashmiri people revolted against Indian occupation and got liberated some areas. These areas are now known by the name of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.Azad Jammu and Kashmir state is located in the northeast of Pakistan. Total area of the state is 13,297 square kilometers with estimated population 3000,000.The state is drained by three major rivers, the Jhelum, the Neelam and the Poonch whose valleys are very beautiful. The area is criss-crossed with rivers and numerous nullahs.
The state of Azad Kashmir is divided into two divisions-Muzaffarabad and Mirpur, having 8 districts consisting of 18 tehsils/sub-divisions. The territory of Azad Kashmir is dotted with a vast chain of scenic and natural beauty spots amidst flowing streams, gushing springs and flowering plants. The mountain tops over the valley look like circular and rectangular caps. The panorama is really enchanting. The beauty and the salubrious climate of the valley was known even from the ancient times. The mythological traditions supported fully by the research of geologists confirm that the valley originally was a huge lake called "Satisar",
Kashmir's greatest historian Kalhan writes about his native land : "It is a country where the sun shines mildly, being the place created by Rishi Kashyap, for his glory - big and lofty houses, learning, Saffron, icy cool water and grapes rare in Heaven are plentiful here - Kailash is the best place in the three worlds (Tri-lok), Himalayas the best place in Kailash, and Kashmir the best place in Himalayas".
Sir Walter Lawrence writes "The valley is an emerald set in pearls; a land of lakes, clear streams, green turf, magnificient trees and mighty mountains where the air is cool, and the water sweet, where men are strong, and women vie with the soil in fruitfulness. "
The importance of the state of Jammu and Kashmir should never be lost sight of, because the borders of our country here touch the boundaries of Pakistan and China - the two states which are hostile to India.
